OUR WORK

UPCOMING PROJECTS

Project Details

We welcome medical and non-medical volunteers for all our missions.

Our team of volunteers and staff are our most valuable asset for accomplishing our mission. Our highest priority is to encourage, support, and empower each and every team member to reach their full potential and abilities. Our leadership is committed to leading by serving.

Our medical and dental teams serve in collaboration with the St. Elizabeth Parish (MAP) and Jamaican Ministry of Health in areas not regularly visited by Jamaican physicians or other healthcare providers, specifically Type 1 clinics. Patients travel great distances to visit our healthcare providers in loaded buses, cars, taxis, and motor bikes with the majority walking on foot, often many miles, to the rural communities in which we serve; Ginger Hill, Springfield, Eldersley, Aberdeen, Lacovia, Malvern, Prospect, and Myersville, among others. Both patients and team members benefit from the long term relationships developed over the years and look forward to seeing old and new friends on each return trip.

During the 9 day project the typical schedule is as follows:

Friday: team assembles and overnights in Montego Bay.  Saturday: depart Montego Bay and for the Junction Guest House, Junction, St. Elizabeth, which will be the base camp for the remainder of the project, approximately 3 hour travel time.  Sunday: morning worship service conducted by volunteers.  Sunday afternoon: pre-package medications, prepare equipment and supplies for the clinic days.  Monday - Friday: medical and dental team travel to a different clinic each day. Some of the clinics may be 1-2 hours away from the base camp requiring an early departure.  Return to base camp before dark. Evenings: free time, sharing. Saturday morning: travel back to Montego Bay airport for afternoon departure.

Dental team: comprised of dentists, hygienists, dental assistants and general helpers provide tooth extraction with pain management.

Medical team: may consist of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, EMTs, physical therapists, opticians and general helpers. The medical team provides basic primary medical care, medications, screening, medical referrals, and health education.

Accommodations:  Motel style rooms with private bath, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Most volunteers will be asked to share a room with one other volunteer.

Meals: Typical Jamaican food.  Breakfast and dinner provided by the guest house. Lunches at clinics are typically Jamaican patties or meals purchased from local vendors.  Special dietary needs can be accommodated by the guest house.

Transportation: via air-conditioned chartered buses and vans with dedicated professional driver.
