St. Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica

An extremely successful mission fair was carried out in St. Elizabeth Parish by Jamaica Missions USA from February 23 to March 3, 2018 for the first week of a two week project. The project included medical, dental, and educational therapies for the first week of the two week project. The dental report is to be submitted separately.

There were 17 volunteers involved in the medical and educational aspects of this project with 12 people coming from the United States although 3 were born in Jamaica. Three more people came from Jamaica, having been born in Jamaica. Two participants came from Canada. There were 3 physicians, 4 nurses, 2 pharmacists, 6 general helpers, and 2 educators.

Clinics visited were both type 1 and type 2 and included Springfield, New Market, Elderslie, Braes River, and Newell Maternity Center. The diagnoses made included over 90 conditions. Some examples found were hypertension, diabetes mellitus, arthritis of several joints, asthma, Gl reflux disease, poor appetite, insomnia, wheezing, multiple dermatologic conditions, sinus drainage, infections of many sites, kidney stones, prostate cancer, enlarged prostate, vaginitis, stroke, goiter, Gl worms, breast mass, dog bite, lung disease, miscarriage, etc. One volunteer sustained an injury to her arm in an airport in the United States. Another volunteer developed bronchitis shortly after arriving in Jamaica. There were no other illnesses or injuries.

Statistics were collected. These showed that 305 Jamaicans were evaluated and treated medically. Of these 231 were adults and 74 were children. The number of prescriptions filled at the pharmacy was 1,126. There were 46 parasite treatments. A total of 316 Jamaicans were seen in IHE for health education, and 136 of these were privately counseled for integrated health whereas 180 received health education.
